But the situation is not as alarming as it may sound. "The highest level of activity in two years" does not mean the network is anywhere near peak congestion. The previous real peak happened about three years ago, when the fees paid for transactions included in block 788,695 totaled 6.701 BTC, exceeding the block subsidy at the time, which was 6.25 BTC. By two years ago, things had already calmed down. In fact, exactly two years ago, on June 24, 2024, Bitget published a note saying that Bitcoin fees had fallen to a seven-month low.
So what CoinDesk is really telling us is that network activity has only now climbed back above a level last seen when fees were already near a low point.
Take a look at the screenshot from Mempool.Space: the mempool has not even reached its standard 300 MB limit. That means nodes are still accepting all low-fee transactions, and each transactions has a chance of being included in a block.
